Doing a
little research finds that Ohle doesn't write too many books, which dovetails
well with the fact that I've read only one of his books, Age of Sinatra.
This book is a sequel to Motorman, written in 1972. I can see why
it takes 34 years to get the second book out.
Ohle is very good at crafting
a complete and odd world that has some passing resemblance to our world.
It almost seems that our world had become the tomato that was left in
the fridge too long. Ohle has worked on the minutia of his world to the
point of compulsiveness.
The book is a page turner
but if one keeps close reference to all the strange items in the book,
kind of like concentrating on a point far in the distance during a long,
dark, drunk stumble home. One momentary lapse in attention and you are
careening off the comprehension path.
I would suggest the author
(and particularly Age of Sinatra) if you thought that the world
of Dune with the floating guy was particularly interesting and
you don't mind drifting into new dialogues like A Clockwork Orange.
