I remember
sitting in the Philadelphia airport cruising for a book when I first stumbled
across Frey's work. I had two books in mind, weighing them in my hands as
if I were infact a scale. The other was a Stephen King book that could have
doubled as a set of encyclopedias. Mr. Frey had come out victorious in my
little battle of the Steves and so my journey into the Financial Thriller
world began.
For those of you who haven't tread
into this area, Financial Thrillers can be just a hair different than the
tried and true spy book. In Mr. Frey's case they are almost exactly the same
in structure...and a great structure it is!
He offers us twists and turns
as any spy book through the eyes of the singular main character all the way
up to the bombastic conclusion. The books themselves have a good rhythym and
ease of read that can keep you interested while not weighing you down with
a week-long read.
He has many books out and after
reading nearly all of his offerings, I have to say that perhaps a standard
structure appears, but that's not so bad... Just ask Jerry Bruckhiemer, he's
got a formula that keeps me coming back again and again, whether it be Top
Gun or Gone In 60 Seconds.
Mr. Frey, a retired investment
banker who worked in the very same areas as his characters, also put in enough
details to make the world which his characters function as interesting as
the plot. The information feels real and the plot is intertwined with the
reality of the goings on of big business as well as the gossip of such a lifestyle
- as far as I know!
